The LORD Has Promised!

His Covenant, His People, His Glory

Note: In this post, “Christ” means Anointed One—the Hebrew Messiah—whom God promised to redeem Israel and all the world.¹

His Everlasting Covenant

Psalm 105:7–11 (ESV)
He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac, which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”

God binds Himself by oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—an everlasting covenant.² To oppose what God has pledged is to oppose God Himself.

Genesis 12:1–3
…I will make of you a great nation… I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

From the first promise: blessing to Israel; blessing to the nations.

Promise and Restoration

Jeremiah 30:1–3
…days are coming… when I will restore the fortunes of my people… and I will bring them back to the land… and they shall take possession of it.

History testifies that God keeps His word. The reestablishment of the modern State of Israel (May 14, 1948) is, for many, a dramatic marker of God’s providence in history.

Ezekiel 36:22–28
Not for Israel’s sake alone, but for His Holy Name, God promises cleansing, a new heart, and His Spirit within them, to walk in His ways.

Ezekiel 37:11–14
The vision of dry bones is answered with resurrection language and homeland restoration: *“I will put my Spirit within you… and I will place you in your own land.”*³

The Nations in the Dock

Joel 3:1–2
…I will gather all the nations… and enter into judgment with them there… because they have scattered my people… and have divided up my land.

God will judge the nations for how they treated His people and His land. Read also Isaiah 11 and Zechariah 12–14: the Branch reigns, Jerusalem is delivered, and the nations learn to fear the LORD.

Covenant Love for Israel… and the World

The covenant to Abraham always had a global horizon (Gen 12:3). In Messiah Jesus, Israel’s King, the blessing spills over to the nations.

Acts 2:21–24, 29–41
Peter proclaims Jesus’ death and resurrection; the crowd is cut to the heart and asks, “What shall we do?” The apostolic answer remains: “Repent and be baptized… for the forgiveness of your sins… For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off.”

Ezekiel 36 and Acts 2 harmonize: God gives His Spirit, cleanses, and gathers a people to Himself—first to the Jew, then also to the Gentile (cf. Rom 1:16).

A Call to Respond

Because God keeps covenant:

  • Repent and believe the Gospel (Mark 1:15; Acts 3:19–21; 10:43).

  • Call upon the Name of the Lord (Acts 2:21; Rom 10:9–13).

  • Be baptized and devote yourself to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers (Acts 2:38, 42).

  • Join a local church that holds the Bible as the final authority, adding nothing to and taking nothing away from God’s Holy Word (Acts 17:11; Rev 22:18–19).⁴

Your Redeemer lives. Praise His Holy Name forever and ever! Amen.

Footnotes & Clarifications

  1. Christ = Messiah. “Christ” (Greek Christos) is “Anointed One,” the promised Messiah who redeems Israel and the nations (Ps 2; Isa 9:6–7; Luke 24:44–47).

  2. “A thousand generations.” A Hebrew idiom for perpetual remembrance; God’s covenant faithfulness outlasts human memory (Deut 7:9; Ps 105:8).

  3. Dry Bones & Restoration. Ezekiel 37 depicts national restoration and spiritual renewal. Many see echoes in Israel’s 20th-century return and anticipate fuller fulfillment in Israel’s future turning to Messiah (cf. Rom 11:12, 26–27).

  4. Church & Authority. Look for a congregation where Scripture is supreme in doctrine and practice (2 Tim 3:16–17), and where the Gospel of grace (Eph 2:8–9) produces holy, Scripture-shaped living (Eph 2:10; Titus 2:11–14).
